Chapter 4
A Close Call
Leaving the restaurant, Mark's daughter nearly spots them. He scrambles to hide Chloe in a clumsy, comical attempt. The near-miss heightens his anxiety but also his burgeoning, complicated feelings.
The clinking of cutlery and the murmur of contented diners were usually a comforting soundtrack to Mark’s evenings, a far cry from the chaotic symphony of his own home. Tonight, however, the ambient noise felt amplified, each forkful of pasta a tiny hammer blow to his already frayed nerves. He’d managed to get through the main course, a surprisingly decent salmon with dill sauce, and now, the dessert menu lay before him like a cryptic prophecy. Mark blinked, momentarily thrown. Crazy? His life was a perpetual state of controlled chaos. Waking up at 5 AM to pack five lunches, juggling work deadlines with school plays, negotiating bedtime stories with a five-year-old who believed the moon was made of cheese – that was his normal. “Uh, I once drove for three hours in the wrong direction because I was so engrossed in an audiobook,” he admitted, feeling a flush creep up his neck. “Does that count as crazy?”
