Chapter 4
Whispers of the Shadow Weaver
D.A.D. begins his mission, battling shadowy beasts feeding on children's fears. A sinister presence, the Shadow Weaver, is revealed, its dark tendrils reaching for Rion.
The city, usually a hum of drowsy traffic and distant sirens, seemed to hold its breath. A hush had fallen over the neighborhoods, a quiet that wasn't peaceful, but pregnant with a creeping dread. Karmaine, now D.A.D., felt it in his bones, a chill that had nothing to do with the evening air. The power pulsed beneath his skin, a comforting warmth that contrasted sharply with the encroaching coldness of the night. He could *see* it now, not with his eyes, but with a sense that had awakened within him – the tendrils of fear, thin and black as spider silk, reaching out from the darkened corners of bedrooms, from beneath beds, from the spaces where shadows coalesced into something more.
His first few excursions had been tentative, almost disbelieving. He’d followed the faint, trembling cries of children, the silent screams that only the truly vulnerable could emit. In one house, he’d found a small girl, huddled beneath her covers, her breath coming in shallow gasps. Around her, the air shimmered with a viscous darkness, coalescing into a creature that resembled a shaggy, many-legged dog with eyes like smoldering embers. It lapped at her fear, growing fatter and more solid with each terrified whimper. D.A.D. had stepped in, a radiant light blooming from his hands. The creature had shrieked, a sound like tearing fabric, and dissolved into wisps of smoke. He’d felt a surge of relief, a confirmation that this was real, that he could *do* this.
Tonight, the whispers were louder. They slithered through the wind, promising nightmares, whispering doubts into the sleeping minds of children. Karmaine stood on the rooftop of his apartment building, the city spread out below him like a dark, star-dusted blanket. The divine light that now emanated from him, a soft, golden aura, pushed back the immediate gloom, making him a beacon in the encroaching night. He could sense the distress, a symphony of small, terrified hearts beating in unison.
