The city of Veridia held its breath. Above, the sky bled a deep, unnatural crimson, the moon a swollen, pulsing wound against the bruised velvet of night. It wasn't just any moon; it was the Crimson Moon, a celestial anomaly whispered about in hushed tones, a harbinger of… well, usually, it was just a pretty sight. But tonight, it felt different. Tonight, it felt like a countdown.
My tail twitched, an anxious semaphore against the worn leather of my pants. The air crackled, thick with a tension that vibrated right down to my bones, a hum that felt both alien and strangely familiar. Beside me, Kael’s fingers danced over the holographic interface of his cobbled-together scanner. His brow was furrowed, his usual sardonic smirk replaced by a grim focus.
“It’s getting stronger, Lyra,” he muttered, not looking up. “The magical signature. It’s… it’s like a dam about to burst.”
