The air crackled, not with the usual hum of the city’s intricate machinery, but with a raw, untamed energy that vibrated deep in my bones. It was the kind of energy that made my fur prickle and my tail twitch with a nervous anticipation I’d learned to recognize. We were at the Nexus, the heart of it all, where the city’s magic and technology bled into one another, a swirling, chaotic symphony. Kael stood beside me, his hand resting lightly on my arm, a silent anchor in the storm brewing around us. Even his usual cynical smirk was replaced by a grim tension.
Before us, bathed in the pulsating light of the central conduit, stood Silas Vane. He looked less like a man and more like a sculptor who had just finished his masterpiece, a chillingly serene smile gracing his lips. His eyes, dark and fathomless, swept over me, a flicker of something akin to recognition, or perhaps just amusement, dancing within their depths.
“Lyra,” he said, his voice smooth as polished obsidian, carrying effortlessly over the thrumming magic. “You finally found your way home.”
