The night air, cool and carrying the faint scent of pine, wrapped around Elara and Aurora like a soft blanket. They sat on the porch swing, its gentle creak a familiar lullaby under the vast, star-dusted canvas of the sky. Earlier, they had traced constellations, Aurora pointing out the Hunter and the Bear, Elara imagining them as ancient storytellers whispering secrets across the eons. But the conversation had drifted, as it often did, to the immeasurable.
“Mom,” Elara’s voice, small yet resonant in the quiet, broke the contented silence. Her gaze, usually flitting between the celestial bodies, was now fixed on her mother’s face, her eyes wide with an earnestness that always made Aurora’s heart swell. “If the universe is so big, and there are so many stars, and maybe even other planets with other people… then are we just like… tiny little specks of dust?”
Aurora’s breath hitched, just for a moment. It was a question that echoed in the chambers of her own soul, a question that had, at times, felt like a lead weight in her chest. She could feel the familiar pull to have the perfect, comforting answer, the one that would instantly dissolve Elara’s potential unease. But she remembered their recent journeys, the beauty they had found in the unravelling, the shared wonder of not knowing. She smoothed Elara’s hair, her fingers finding the soft curls.
