The air in the village of San Cristobal hung thick and sweet, a potent blend of woodsmoke and something I couldn't quite place, something ancient and earthy. It clung to my clothes, seeped into my hair, a stark contrast to the crisp, clean magic of Cora Amauta. We’d arrived two days ago, the usual excitable chatter of our group subdued by the quiet reverence of this place. The villagers, their faces etched with the wisdom of generations who’d lived in harmony with the land, had welcomed us with cautious curiosity. But it was the whispers, the hushed tones when they spoke of the old ways, that truly drew us in.

Our excursion, meant to be a simple study of regional magical practices, had taken a sharp turn with the discovery of that strange, obsidian shard back at school. It pulsed with a low, resonant energy, unlike anything in our textbooks. And now, here, in San Cristobal, under the watchful gaze of the Andes, it felt as though the very earth was trying to tell us something.

“Are you sure about this, Amanda?” Ayani’s voice was a low murmur, her eyes, usually so bright, shadowed with a thoughtful intensity. We stood before a small, overgrown structure, half-hidden by gnarled vines and wild orchids. It wasn’t grand, not like the temples of the Inca, but there was an undeniable aura about it. An old shrine, the village elder had called it, a place of forgotten prayers.
