The crisp autumn air of Cora Amauta, usually a comforting embrace, felt different this year. It carried a subtle tension, a hum of unease that had settled over the school grounds like a persistent mist. Our second year had begun with a flurry of new rituals, arcane theories that twisted my brain into knots, and the ever-present mystery of that strange, shadowy creature that had flitted through the periphery of our lives. It was a constant, nagging question mark, a whisper of something ancient and untamed lurking just beyond our understanding.
“Are you sure this is a good idea, Amanda?” Ayani’s voice, always a balm of calm, held a trace of apprehension. She adjusted the strap of her satchel, her keen eyes scanning the rolling hills that stretched beyond the school’s protective wards.
“We need a change of scenery, Ayani,” I replied, trying to inject more confidence into my tone than I actually felt. “Besides, Professor Ito said this excursion would be… illuminating. A chance to see how magic weaves into the everyday lives of those outside our walls.”
