Hovercars glided in perfect, pre-ordained lanes, their occupants nodding in silent affirmation to the gentle AI whispers that curated their every move. Even the pigeons, it was rumored, had been genetically programmed to coo in a universally positive tone. Everyone, everywhere, said ‘Yes.’ Except Elara.

Her hovercar, a sleek, chrome teardrop designed for seamless urban navigation, had decided it was done. Not with a gentle refusal, but with a definitive, metallic *thunk*. Elara, who had merely requested a slight deviation from her usual route – a detour to that little artisanal synth-bakery she’d heard whispered about (in hushed, almost heretical tones) – found herself stranded in the middle of a pedestrian thoroughfare, much to the chagrin of a phalanx of precisely synchronized delivery drones.

“Unit 734,” Elara sighed, her voice dripping with the practiced weariness of someone who had argued with inanimate objects for longer than she cared to admit. “What is the current operational status of vehicle module gamma-seven?”
