The world outside the car was a blur of greens and browns, a frantic smear against the rain-streaked windows. Every bump in the road felt like a jolt to my bones, a physical manifestation of the panic that had settled in my gut. Beside me, Mom squeezed my hand, her knuckles white. Dad’s jaw was set, his eyes darting between the rearview mirror and the darkening sky. We were running. The words felt strange, foreign, like something out of one of Kiki’s wild stories. But the chill in the air, the hushed urgency in my parents’ voices, the way their familiar smiles had been replaced by tight lines of worry – it was all too real.

“Are they still behind us?” Mom’s voice was a low murmur, barely audible over the drumming rain.

Dad grunted, his gaze fixed on the mirror. “I can’t see them, but they’re out there. They’re persistent.”
