The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick with dust and the metallic tang of decay. It was a place that had seen better days, a fitting stage for the confrontation I was about to instigate. My parents stood beside me, their presence a solid anchor in the churning storm of my emotions. Grief was a raw, gaping wound, and Kiki’s final, desperate smile was etched into my mind, a phantom warmth against the icy dread that threatened to consume me. Her sacrifice, her belief in me even as she faced the darkness, had ignited something fierce and unyielding within my chest. Rage was a wildfire, but beneath it, a chilling clarity began to form.

“Are you sure about this, David?” Dad’s voice was quiet, laced with a concern that did little to soothe the tremor in my hands. He knew, of course, that my usual impulsive nature had been amplified tenfold by Kiki’s loss, but this was different. This wasn't just about being the strongest; it was about understanding.

Mom squeezed my arm, her grip firm. “We’re with you, no matter what. But remember what we’ve taught you. Brute force isn’t always the answer.” Her eyes, usually so sharp and full of fire, held a deep, unsettling sorrow. She knew the cost of this path, the sacrifices it demanded.
