A Test of Will

The air crackled, not with the usual hum of city life, but with a tense, almost brittle energy that made the hairs on my arms stand on end. Dad, Yuji, had that familiar, set look in his eyes, the one that meant business, and Mom, Nobara, was practically vibrating with a controlled fury. Kiki… Kiki was nowhere to be seen. The thought of her, a sudden, sharp pang in my chest, always made things harder. The memory of her laughter, her silly stories about writing the next great novel, was a warmth I clung to in the cold dread that had become my constant companion.

“They’re testing us, David,” Dad said, his voice low, a rumble against the unnerving silence. “Trying to see what we’re made of, and more importantly, what *you* are.”

Mom nodded, her hand resting on my shoulder, a grounding weight. “Don’t let them provoke you. Remember what we’ve been practicing. Control. Not just power, but control.”
