Chapter 7: The Echo Opens
Sofia faces the sealed door with five shards as the Solitary Ones approach. A Solitary One guardian reveals the sixth shard is not physical but the will to complete the task, and the door opens through the song of the shards. Sofia enters, descends to the Heartstone Chamber, and sees the final shard on the pedestal, but pauses to reflect on the weight of her choice.
Sofia pressed her back against the cold stone of the massive door, the carvings of waves and stars pressing into her shoulders. The single piercing cry from behind her echoed through the tunnel, then faded into a chorus of whispers—closer now, and growing louder. The shards in her pocket pulsed in a rhythm that matched her heartbeat, and she could feel the cool weight of five keys against her hip.
She had no sixth shard. The slot above the door—a perfect crescent—waited empty. Thalia had said the final shard lay in the Heartstone Chamber itself, that the path would open when she stood before the locked door. But the door was still sealed, and the Solitary Ones were coming.
Sofia raised her hand and touched the carved waves. The stone was smooth, worn by centuries of water. The shards hummed a low, questioning note, and the carvings began to glow with a faint blue light—so faint she thought she imagined it. She pressed her palm flat against the door, and the song of the shards grew louder, spilling out of her pocket and into the stone.
