The air hung thick and cloying, a miasma of decay that clawed at Ubbe’s throat. It was no longer the scent of dying leaves or the damp earth of autumn; this was a stench of rot, of life curdled and twisted into something foul. The blight had seeped deeper than the fur of the deer or the feathers of the ravens. It had reached the very heart of his land, and now, it pulsed with a malevolent rhythm that echoed in the hollows of his bones.

He stood at the edge of the corrupted grove, the once vibrant emerald canopy now a skeletal tapestry of black and grey. The silence here was a palpable weight, a suffocating absence of the chirps, rustles, and growls that had always formed the symphony of his territory. Even the wind seemed to fear to tread. Ragnar, his fur matted and dull, stood a respectful distance behind, his jaw tight with a grim unease that mirrored Ubbe’s own.

“It grows stronger, Ubbe,” Ragnar’s voice was a low rumble, laced with a weariness that had settled into the pack like a shroud. “The sickness… it’s not just in the animals. I can feel it in the trees themselves, in the very stone beneath our paws.”
