Unlikely Allies

The biting wind whipped through the skeletal branches of ancient pines, carrying with it the acrid scent of decay. Ubbe Ravenwolf, his fur a midnight shadow against the snow-dusted earth, moved with a hunter’s grace, his amber eyes scanning the desolate landscape. The blight was a creeping poison, leaching the life from the very soul of his ancestral lands, and its tendrils reached further than he had ever imagined. He had left the familiar embrace of the Appalachians, following the faintest of trails, a desperate hope for answers guiding his paws.

He paused, a low growl rumbling in his chest. The air vibrated with a sorrowful energy, a lament that echoed the suffering of his own pack. Ahead, in a clearing choked with withered ferns, a creature of myth lay dying. It was a Gryphon, its magnificent wings tattered, its once proud beak stained with a sickly grey ooze. Its golden eyes, filmed with pain, fixed on Ubbe as he approached, a flicker of recognition, or perhaps just a desperate plea, passing between them.

“Foulness claims even the sky-borne,” Ubbe murmured, his voice a deep rumble that carried a hint of sorrow. He knelt beside the magnificent beast, his heart aching. He could feel the blight’s icy grip, a malevolent force that sought to extinguish all that was pure and vibrant.
