Chapter 6
Brave Hearts
Lily held Tom's hand, feeling a little stronger. They were still sad to be away from home, but the kindness of Ms. Clara and their new friend gave them hope. They knew they could be brave together. They looked forward to going home.
Lily squeezed Tom’s hand, her fingers a little less shaky than they had been. The room, bright with sunshine and the cheerful chatter of other children, felt a bit friendlier now. It was still strange, of course, and a tiny ache in her chest reminded her of the warm, familiar scent of home, and the gentle curve of her mom’s smile. But Tom was right there, his small hand a warm weight in hers, and Ms. Clara’s voice, soft like a lullaby, echoed in her mind. “You are safe, my dears. You are loved.”
Tom, usually so quick to cling and whimper, was surprisingly calm. He watched a group of children outside in the garden, their laughter drifting through the open window. Their faces, usually so worried and uncertain, held a spark of curiosity now. He’d been a little scared when the grown-ups with serious faces had come to their house, and even more scared when Mommy and Daddy had looked so sad. But Lily had held him close, her own eyes wide but steady, and whispered, “It’s okay, Tommy. We’re together.” And somehow, that had made all the difference.
Ms. Clara had found them sitting on a soft rug, a colorful picture book open between them but unread. She’d knelt down, her eyes crinkling kindly at the corners. “Hello, Lily. Hello, Tom,” she’d said, her voice like warm honey. “I’m Ms. Clara. This is a special place for children to stay when things are a little bit topsy-turvy at home. Think of it as a cozy nest, where you can rest and feel safe.” She’d explained that their grown-ups loved them very, very much, and were working hard to make sure they could come back home soon.
