I swear, sometimes I think my life is just one big glitter explosion of embarrassment, and the main fireworks are provided by two tiny, yappy furballs named Baby Blue Bears and Russo Baby Bears. They’re my familiars, my – ugh – chihuahua familiars. Most witches have majestic owls or sleek black cats. I have two little dogs who sound like squeaky toys being tortured and whose idea of a good time involves barking at their own reflections.

“Amy! Amy! Look what I found!” Baby Blue Bears, all wiry fur and manic energy, skittered into my room, a rather grubby-looking sock dangling precariously from his mouth. He dropped it at my feet with a triumphant woof. Russo Baby Bears, equally pint-sized and equally prone to chaos, trotted in behind him, carrying a stray sequin he’d probably liberated from my spell-making station.

“That’s just a sock, Blue,” I sighed, nudging it away with my toe. “And Russo, that’s my sequin. Honestly, can’t you two behave for five minutes?”
