Chapter 4
A Familiar Feeling
Amy notices her chihuahuas reacting strangely to the night-blooming flora, their barks and growls seeming to harmonize with the flowers' faint glow. She starts to wonder if they know something.
The air in my little cottage felt thick, like a blanket woven from dust bunnies and forgotten dreams. Outside, the Spooky Moon was doing its usual creepy thing, hanging there like a giant, pale eye that had seen too much. It was the kind of night that made even Baby Blue Bears and Russo Baby Bears, my two miniature tornadoes of fluff and fury, huddle a little closer to my worn-out slippers. Usually, they’d be chasing dust motes or attempting to scale the curtains, their tiny barks echoing through the quiet house like a drill sergeant’s whistle. But tonight? Tonight, they were… subdued.
I was trying to perfect my ‘Starlight Sparkle’ spell, which was supposed to make your tea taste like a summer evening and your socks always find their match. It was… not going well. My glitter was more of a dull shimmer, and my socks remained stubbornly single. Typical. My magic was about as effective as a screen door on a submarine.
Then I noticed it. A faint, ethereal glow seeping through the cracks in my window shutters. It wasn’t the Spooky Moon’s sickly pallor. This was… different. It was a gentle, pulsing light, like fireflies having a rave. And it was coming from the edge of the woods, where the Midnight Blooms were said to unfurl their petals only when the moon was at its most menacing.
