The Spooky Moon loomed, a bruised, purple eye staring down at our little village. It wasn't just big; it was heavy, pressing down on everything, sucking the color out of the sky and the cheer out of my heart. My glitter spells, usually so vibrant, felt dull and sad, like a party that got rained out. And the chihuahuas? Oh, the chihuahuas. They were usually a source of sheer, unadulterated mortification. Baby Blue Bears, with his perpetually anxious ears, and Russo Baby Bears, whose tail seemed to have a mind of its own, wagging with a frantic, slightly unhinged energy. They were tiny tornadoes of noise and chaos, and right now, they were doing what they did best: making a spectacle.

But as the Spooky Moon swelled, something shifted. It wasn’t just me feeling the creeping dread. The air crackled with an unnatural silence, the kind that makes your teeth ache. Even the crickets had packed it in. And then, the chihuahuas. They were usually terrified of loud noises, of sudden movements, of anything that wasn’t their squeaky toys or a particularly interesting dust bunny. Yet, as the Spooky Moon reached its zenith, casting long, skeletal shadows across the village square, they didn’t cower. They stood, two tiny, furry exclamation points against the encroaching gloom, and they barked.

It wasn't their usual yappy, “I saw a leaf!” kind of bark. This was a deep, resonant sound, a defiant challenge that seemed to vibrate right through the cobblestones. Baby Blue Bears, usually the more timid of the two, stood with his hackles raised, a miniature lion defending his pride. Russo Baby Bears, ever the showman, let out a series of sharp, staccato barks, each one a tiny cannonball aimed squarely at the offending celestial body.
