As the bus continues toward Nashville, Layla wonders if her father is pursuing her on the highway. The bus stops in Clarksville, where a tense moment with a patrol car proves to be a false alarm. Summer and Layla share a meal and talk about the future, including an invitation from Summer's friend Eleanor to stay at her guesthouse. Layla receives a text from her mother that reveals William knows she's gone but that Ruth will not help him find her. The bus arrives in Nashville, where a man named Samuel, sent by Eleanor, greets them at the station.
The bus hummed beneath her. The fields stretched wide and green. And the town of her childhood shrank into the distance until it was nothing more than a speck in the rearview mirror.
Layla pressed her forehead against the window, watching the landscape blur past. The highway unspooled in a long gray ribbon, and the bus ate up the miles with a steady rumble that vibrated through her seat.
Summer sat beside her, quiet for a long time. Then she reached over and squeezed Layla's hand. "How are you feeling?"
