The bus hummed beneath her. The fields stretched wide and green. And the town of her childhood shrank into the distance until it was nothing more than a speck in the rearview mirror.

Layla pressed her forehead against the window, watching the landscape blur past. The highway unspooled in a long gray ribbon, and the bus ate up the miles with a steady rumble that vibrated through her seat.

Summer sat beside her, quiet for a long time. Then she reached over and squeezed Layla's hand. "How are you feeling?"
