Layla reaches the bus station, meets Summer, and boards the 11:45 bus to Nashville. As the bus departs, her father's truck pulls into the station parking lot, forcing Layla to hide in the restroom until Summer convinces security that William is a threatening stranger. The bus leaves safely, but William is now alerted to her escape.

Layla walked fast, the duffel bag bumping against her hip. Maple Street was quiet at this hour—most people were already at church or still in their houses, finishing Sunday coffee. She kept her head down and her pace steady.

The bus station was a single-room building with a peeling grey sign that read "CROSS COUNTY TRANSIT" in faded blue letters. A bench sat out front, empty. Layla pushed through the glass door and stepped inside.

The air smelled like old vinyl and floor wax. A clerk sat behind a counter, reading a newspaper. Two other passengers—an older man with a cane and a woman holding a sleeping toddler—sat on plastic chairs near the far wall.
