Chapter 11
Negra's Perspective
Negra, having enjoyed her walk, is content. Her simple joy contrasts with Camilo's elaborate narrative, reminding them of the everyday joys amidst fantasy.
The asphalt hummed beneath my paws, a familiar vibration that sang of open spaces and the glorious scent of freedom. Oh, the freedom! It was a symphony of smells out here, a vibrant tapestry woven from the discarded dreams of half-eaten sandwiches, the lingering perfume of a thousand passing feet, and the tantalizing whisper of a distant squirrel. My humans, Camilo and Juliana, were engaged in their usual spirited conversation, a cascade of words that sometimes sounded like a squawking flock of pigeons and other times like the gentle rustle of leaves. I didn't always grasp the meaning of their sounds, but the feeling was usually clear. Today, it was a bright, energetic hum, much like the one beneath my paws.
Camilo, my magnificent, often dramatic Camilo, was in his element. He strode with a purpose that I, a creature of instinct and immediate gratification, could only admire. His voice, a rich baritone that could rumble like distant thunder or soar like a triumphant eagle, was currently weaving tales of conquest and peril. He pointed with grand gestures, his arms carving arcs through the air as if he were cleaving through enemy lines. I trotted beside him, my tail giving a happy little flick-flack, absorbing the ambient excitement. Even if the peril was, as Juliana often pointed out with a sigh that was more fond than exasperated, more imagined than real, the energy was infectious.
Juliana, my steady, sensible Juliana, walked with a more measured pace, her eyes often rolling skyward in a way that made me suspect she possessed a private language with the clouds. She’d offer Camilo a wry smile, a gentle nudge, or a soft “Camilo, honestly.” These moments were like cool water on a hot day, a grounding force that kept his soaring narratives from drifting entirely into the stratosphere. I loved them both, of course. Camilo was the sun, all warmth and dazzling light. Juliana was the moon, a constant, reassuring glow. And I, Negra, was the Earth, solid and steadfast, providing a comfortable place for their orbits to converge.
