The air in our humble abode, usually thick with the scent of Negra’s contented snores and the faint aroma of yesterday’s dinner, now hummed with a different sort of energy. As Juliana and I stepped back across the threshold, the familiar worn rug beneath our feet felt less like a doormat and more like the sacred ground upon which heroes tread. Negra, of course, trotted in with the nonchalant air of a creature who had witnessed countless epic sagas unfold, her tail giving a single, eloquent thump against the doorframe. She probably thought we’d just been to the park. Bless her innocent, furry heart.

Our mother, bless her equally innocent, furry-heart-adjacent soul, was waiting. She stood near the kitchen counter, a picture of domestic tranquility, a slight smile playing on her lips. It was the kind of smile that made you wonder if she knew more than she let on, the kind of smile that suggested she’d seen this particular brand of theatrical flair before. Perhaps she saw it in the mirror every morning. I straightened my shoulders, preparing for the official debrief.

“We have returned, Mother,” I announced, my voice resonating with the gravity of a seasoned warrior reporting back from the front lines. “The artifact has been secured. La Reina is… safe.” I paused for dramatic effect, letting the weight of the words settle. Juliana, bless her practical soul, simply leaned against the doorframe, a faint smirk playing on her lips. She knew. Oh, she knew.
