Chapter 8
A Shared Silence
Moments of comfortable silence grow between Leo and Mr. Dan. These pauses are not empty but filled with unspoken understanding and a burgeoning sense of trust.
The early morning air in the bakery was a gentle embrace, a stark contrast to the biting chill that had clung to me on that bridge. It smelled of yeast and warmth, a comforting aroma that had, over the past few weeks, begun to seep into the cracks of my hardened heart. Mr. Dan moved around the kitchen with a quiet grace, his hands dusted with flour, his movements economical and precise. I was beside him, ostensibly learning the rhythm of kneading, but mostly just absorbing the stillness he exuded.
For a long time, silence had been a torment. It was a gaping void where the accusations of my past would rush in, amplified and relentless. But here, with Mr. Dan, silence had transformed. It was no longer an enemy, but a companion. It was a space where I didn’t have to fill the air with apologies or explanations, because none were needed. He simply accepted my presence, my clumsy attempts at baking, and the shadows that still flickered behind my eyes.
Today, we were making sourdough. The starter, a living entity Mr. Dan treated with a reverence usually reserved for ancient relics, bubbled with a life of its own. He showed me how to fold the dough, the gentle pressure, the patient wait. We worked side-by-side, our hands moving in a similar, unhurried rhythm. The only sounds were the soft thud of dough on the wooden board, the whir of the mixer when it was time for that, and the occasional sigh of the old oven as it preheated.
