The scent of yeast and sugar had become the wallpaper of my existence. It clung to my clothes, my hair, even, I suspected, to the very pores of my skin. For months, it had been a comforting blanket, a shield against the gnawing emptiness that had once threatened to swallow me whole. Now, it felt like a shroud, a constant reminder of the man I was trying to outrun, the man who had found a fragile sort of peace in this quiet corner of the world.

Mr. Dan moved with a gentle deliberation, his hands, dusted perpetually with flour, shaping dough with an artistry that still mesmerized me. He’d never pressed, never demanded. He simply offered. A warm bed, a roof over my head, and the rhythmic, grounding work of the bakery. It was a kindness so profound, so unexpected, that it had taken me weeks to even begin to accept it.

“Leo,” Mr. Dan’s voice, a low rumble like distant thunder, broke through my thoughts. He was by the large, industrial mixer, his brow furrowed slightly as he watched the dough churn. “You are quiet today. Is the dough too heavy?”
