Chapter 12
A Recipe for Forgiveness
Mr. Dan shares a story, perhaps hinting at his own past struggles, offering Leo a perspective on redemption and the possibility of moving forward.
The scent of yeast and something akin to warm honey had become my world. It clung to my clothes, my hair, even, I suspected, to the very pores of my skin. Five years I had spent drowning in shadows, and then Mr. Dan’s bakery had become my reluctant shore. It wasn’t a place of grand pronouncements or miraculous cures, but of simple, honest work. The rhythmic kneading of dough, the precise weighing of ingredients, the gentle hum of the ovens – these were the quiet anchors that held me tethered to the present.
Mr. Dan, with his flour-dusted apron and eyes that held a universe of gentle understanding, never pushed. He simply offered. He offered a warm bed above the shop, a steady supply of plain, nourishing food, and the chance to lose myself in the tangible creation of bread. It was a stark contrast to the intangible, consuming mire of my own making.
We rarely spoke of *it*. The past, the mistake, the thing that had driven me to that rain-slicked bridge, remained a heavy, unspoken presence between us. Mr. Dan seemed to understand that some wounds needed air, not prodding. He would talk of the weather, of the quirks of his customers, of the subtle art of coaxing a perfect rise from a reluctant dough. And I, in turn, would offer monosyllabic responses, my thoughts a tangled knot I couldn’t begin to unravel.
