Storm of the Heart
A sudden, fierce storm descends, testing their resolve and forcing them to work together to survive. Huddled for shelter, the shared danger strips away their defenses, revealing the deep affection that still exists between them.
The sky, which had been a cheerful blue just moments before, turned an angry bruised purple. The wind whipped through the trees along the riverbank, sending leaves spiraling like frantic dancers. I gripped the sides of the canoe, my knuckles white, and glanced at Tom. His brow was furrowed, his eyes scanning the churning water with a worried intensity I hadn't seen since that time we tried to build a treehouse that ended up more like a pile of precariously stacked lumber.
"This doesn't look good, Lily," he said, his voice tight. The gentle lapping of the water against the hull had been replaced by a more ominous sloshing.
"We're almost to the old ferry landing," I shouted over the rising wind. "Just a little further. We can pull the canoe up there and wait it out." My voice, however, sounded far braver than I felt. The map, tucked safely in my waterproof bag, felt like a lead weight against my hip. This treasure hunt, which had started with such giddy excitement, was quickly turning into a test of nerves.
