The worn wooden paddle dipped into the cool, dark water of the Brownsville River. Beside me, Tom’s paddle mirrored my movements, a familiar rhythm we hadn’t felt in years. The air was thick with the sweet scent of honeysuckle and the distant hum of cicadas, a symphony of summer that used to be the soundtrack to our lives. The old canoe, a sturdy relic from my grandfather’s shed, glided smoothly, carrying us away from the familiar docks and into the embrace of the winding river.

“Remember this spot?” I asked, pointing to a cluster of weeping willows that trailed their leafy fingers into the water. “We used to dare each other to swim under them, pretending we were mermaids and mermen.”

Tom chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that felt like coming home. “You were always the first one in, no matter how cold the water was. I’d be shivering on the bank, trying to work up the nerve.”
