Chapter 11
The Weight of the Stone
Aaron, Lyra, and Morwen return to Thornhaven with the Heartstone. The crystal begins to affect Aaron's shadow powers, drawing both admiration and fear from the villagers. Kael sends a warning that he will attack the neutral village. Aaron decides to use the Heartstone to fortify the village, learning from Silas that the stone must be attuned to his will. The chapter ends with Aaron placing the Heartstone in the village's heart, feeling a surge of power and a vision of the Umbra Lord's army marching.
The journey back to Thornhaven was long and silent. The crimson sky of the Crimson Wastes faded to a bruised purple as they crossed into the forest, the trees closing around them like old friends. Aaron carried the Heartstone in a pouch at his belt, its warmth a constant presence against his hip. It felt alive, pulsing in rhythm with his heartbeat.
Lyra walked beside him, her bow slung across her back. She kept glancing at the pouch, her expression unreadable. Morwen led the way, her staff casting a soft blue light that pushed back the encroaching shadows.
"You've been quiet," Aaron said to Lyra.
