Chapter 6

Chapter 6: The Stone and the Shot

Elara, Lyra, Kael, and Silas go to destroy the black stone in the forest. They face a magical barrier, and Elara uses her hybrid powers to break it. But Thorne has left a trap—a spell that binds Lyra to the stone. Elara must choose between destroying the stone and saving her friend. She finds a way to do both, but the effort drains her. They discover Thorne has already begun siphoning power, and the next full moon is only four nights away. The chapter ends with Elara feeling the stone's pulse in her own chest, realizing she is now a target.

The night came too fast. Elara hadn't slept, and her bones ached with a tiredness that went deeper than muscle. She stood in her backyard, the falls a distant roar, and checked the pouch at her hip for the hundredth time. Salt. Iron. Moonstone. She’d added a small vial of water from the pool, clear and cold, and a feather Kael had given her from a raven. She didn’t know what it all meant, but it felt right.

A car pulled up at the end of the lane. Lyra’s mom’s old sedan, headlights off. Lyra leaned out the window, her face pale in the moonlight. “Get in.”

Elara slid into the back seat next to Kael. Silas was in the passenger seat, wrapped in a long coat, his eyes shadowed. He didn’t speak. Lyra drove, following the directions Elara had mapped out. The roads narrowed, turned to gravel, then dirt. The trees closed in, and the headlights caught the white bark of birches like bones.
