Chapter 5: Threads in the Dark
Elara trains with Kael for three nights, learning to sense and guide the falls' magic. Lyra grows frustrated with being left out and insists on joining. They discover a scorched circle in the forest, evidence that Thorne is already testing his power. Kael warns that the next full moon is only five days away, and they must prepare or risk losing everything.
The next night, Elara slipped out again. The moon was a little less full, but still bright enough to cast shadows. She found Kael at the pool, waiting. He didn't speak, just nodded and gestured for her to begin.
She closed her eyes. Listened. The falls roared, but underneath, that heartbeat pulse. She reached out with her mind, and the water responded—rising, twisting, catching light. She held it there, trembling, until Kael said, "Good. Now let it go gently."
She released. The water settled. Her head throbbed.
