Elara receives a mysterious invitation to meet at the old stone wall. She goes alone, guided by the moon and the falls. There, she finds a young wizard named Kael, sent by Silas to train her. Kael reveals that the falls are a living gateway and that Thorne is gathering allies. Elara learns her first real lesson in channeling magic, discovering she can sense the threads between worlds. The chapter ends with Kael warning that Thorne will strike again at the next full moon, and Elara resolves to protect both worlds, carrying a new sense of purpose.
Elara stared at the note until the sun fully rose, until the pink and gold faded into a clear blue morning. The crescent moon wax seal sat on her desk like a promise. Or a threat. She couldn't decide which.
Her mother called her down for breakfast. Toast, eggs, the same clatter of dishes, the same smell of coffee. Elara sat across from her father—a human, she now knew, with no shimmer at all—and tried to act normal. He asked about school. She said fine. He asked about her friends. She said fine. Everything was fine, and nothing was fine, and the gap between those two truths felt like a chasm she had to cross every time she opened her mouth.
"You seem distracted," her father said, buttering his toast.
