The air in Silas’s hidden sanctuary tasted of dust and forgotten promises. It was a scent that clung to the ancient stone walls, to the heavy velvet drapes that swallowed the scant moonlight, and now, it seemed, to me. I traced the intricate carvings on a heavy oak table, my fingers finding the grooves worn smooth by centuries of use. Silas had led me here after the frantic escape from the warehouse, a place he called his “repository of inconvenient truths.” It was more like a tomb for secrets.
“You’re quiet tonight, Alex,” Silas’s voice, a low rumble, broke the silence. He stood by a tall, narrow window, his silhouette stark against the sliver of night sky. He hadn’t moved since we’d arrived, a statue carved from shadow.
“Just… thinking,” I replied, the word feeling inadequate. Thinking was an understatement. My mind was a churning vortex of fear, confusion, and a gnawing suspicion that had begun to fester the moment Silas had spoken of my lineage. He’d painted a picture of a world I never knew existed, a world of bloodlines and ancient power, and in doing so, had plunged me into a darkness I couldn't yet comprehend.
