The air in my apartment had grown thick, heavy with unspoken things. Lena’s presence, usually a bright counterpoint to my own simmering anxiety, felt muted, her usual easy laughter replaced by a worried frown that etched itself deeper with each passing day. She’d been staying over more often, citing a vague need for company, but I knew it was more than that. She was watching me, her gaze often lingering, searching for answers I couldn’t yet give.

“Alex,” she began, her voice soft, tentative, as she poured us both mugs of chamomile tea, the steam curling between us like a hesitant question. “You’ve been… different. For weeks now.”

I stirred my tea, the spoon clinking against the ceramic, a small, sharp sound in the quiet room. “Different how?” I asked, feigning a casualness I didn’t feel. My senses, dulled by the early morning light filtering through the blinds, still felt sharper than they should. The faint scent of dust motes dancing in the sunbeams, the hum of the refrigerator, the distant siren—they all pricked at my awareness.
