Chapter 7
Alpha's Fury
Alpha Kaelen, a proud werewolf leader, views Ragnar with deep suspicion. Fueled by past betrayals, he prepares his pack for war, seeing the resurgence of magic as a direct threat that must be crushed.
The air in the great den was thick with the scent of pine and old fur, a primal aroma that usually settled Ragnar’s restless spirit. Tonight, it chafed. He sat on the periphery, away from the council of elders, the low murmur of their voices a distant tide against the roaring in his own skull. Fragmented images flickered behind his eyes – a flash of crimson against moonlit snow, the guttural snarl of a beast he barely recognized as himself, and the chilling hiss of something ancient and cold. These were not memories; they were echoes, ghosts of battles long past, and they were growing louder.
Alpha Kaelen’s voice, a rumble of authority that had once been a comfort, now felt like a brand. The Alpha’s fur was a rich, dark sable, his eyes like chips of obsidian, sharp and unforgiving. He spoke of the old ways, of vigilance, of the encroaching darkness that threatened their borders. But his words, laced with a familiar venom, were aimed not at a nebulous threat, but at a specific impurity.
“The balance has been disturbed,” Kaelen declared, his voice resonating through the cavernous space. “The old magic stirs. It is a scent that promises only ruin, a scent that has brought us to the brink before.” He paused, his gaze locking onto Ragnar. “And some among us carry that scent too strongly. Some have forgotten the sanctity of our blood, the purity of our lineage.”
