Benio dominates the one-on-one against Ross, winning five rounds to two. Ms. Tanaka offers her a spot on a girls' select academy team, but Benio refuses, stating she wants to play against everyone, not just girls. Ms. Tanaka respects the decision and leaves her card. Malik and Benio agree to keep training together. The chapter ends with Benio reaffirming her goal to be the best.
The referee's whistle cut the air. Benio stood over the ball, the scuff mark a familiar anchor beneath her thumb. She raised her head and studied the goal. Ross was in the net, leaning forward on his toes, arms spread like a goalkeeper twice his size. He smirked.
She took a step back. The grass was firm. Her ankle pulsed, but she pushed the pain down into a rhythm she could ignore.
Step. Plant. Strike.
