The key turned in the lock with a familiar click, a sound that used to signal the comforting return of my husband, the steady rhythm of our life together. Tonight, it was a prelude to a storm. Arthur walked in, briefcase in hand, a faint scent of sea salt and something else, something alien, clinging to him. He smiled, the same easy, charming smile that had captivated me thirty years ago, but tonight it felt like a mask.

"Eleanor, darling," he said, dropping his keys onto the hall table. "Long day."

I stood in the living room doorway, my arms crossed, my heart thumping a frantic, erratic beat against my ribs. The phone, tucked away in my pocket, felt like a lead weight, a heavy testament to the unraveling of everything I thought I knew. For days, I’d replayed the moment I’d seen those messages, the casual intimacy, the whispered plans, the casual dismissal of our life together. Each word had been a tiny shard of glass, burrowing deep into my soul.
