Chapter 9
Sir Reginald's Sunflower Seed Solution
Elara and Sir Reginald experiment with reversing the pact. They try various whimsical methods, each yielding humorous but ultimately ineffective results, much to Sir Reginald's dismay.
Elara tapped the teacup with a fingernail. It made a delicate tink. “Are you sure about this, Reggie?” she whispered, glancing at her hamster. Sir Reginald Fluffernutter, perched regally on a velvet cushion atop a stack of old encyclopedias, twitched his nose. He was wearing a miniature monocle, a recent acquisition from the ‘Gnome Emporium’ (which was really just Mrs. Higgins’ garden shed, now that the gnomes had decided to redecorate it).
“Pip-pip, Elara,” Sir Reginald squeaked, his voice muffled slightly by the monocle. “The diary was quite explicit. The pact was sealed with… well, with something quite potent and whimsical. Elara sighed. The diary, discovered nestled within the floral pattern of a chipped teacup, was a treasure trove of silliness. It spoke of a group of kids, long ago, who’d wanted Willow Creek to be “the most specialest place ever!” Their pact, sealed with a collective spit-shake and a shared bag of fizzy sherbet, had apparently worked a little too well. Now, the town was a parade of oddities: lampposts that sang opera, mailboxes that dispensed riddles, and, of course, the gnomes, who were currently demanding a daily performance of synchronized swimming from the town’s pigeons.
