Elara’s house was a symphony of sighs. Not the dramatic, theatrical kind, but the soft, almost apologetic sighs of objects that had seen better days. A chipped porcelain teacup, perched precariously on a doily that looked like it had been knitted by a very patient spider, seemed to exhale a faint scent of Earl Grey and forgotten gossip. A grandfather clock in the hall, its pendulum swinging with a languid tick-tock, sounded less like a timekeeper and more like a sleepy giant clearing its throat. Elara, who considered her home a veritable museum of the mildly peculiar, often found herself listening.

Today, the house was particularly chatty. As Elara sat at the worn oak table, a half-eaten jam sandwich beside her, a wave of… something… washed over her. It wasn’t the usual hum of the house; this was sharper, more insistent. It felt like a forgotten song bubbling up from the depths of her mind, a melody she knew intimately but couldn’t quite place.

Suddenly, the world tilted. The jam sandwich blurred, the oak table seemed to ripple, and Elara found herself not in her familiar kitchen, but standing in a sun-dappled clearing. Laughter, bright and unrestrained, echoed around her. Small hands, sticky with something sweet, were reaching for a collection of tiny, brightly coloured hats. She saw a younger version of herself, her pigtails bouncing, her eyes wide with a mischievous glee she hadn’t felt in years. Beside her, a group of children, their faces flushed with excitement, were whispering, their voices a conspiratorial murmur that seemed to weave itself into the very fabric of the air.
