The dust motes, once dancing with spectral energy, now pirouetted with a gentle, sun-drenched grace. Willow Creek, as if exhaling a collective sigh of relief, had shed its peculiar skin of gnome-hatted bewilderment and croquet-mallet contortions. The garden gnomes, bless their ceramic hearts, were back to their stoic, unadorned selves, their tiny painted eyes gazing blankly at the now-ordinary rose bushes. Even Mrs. Higgins’ prize-winning petunias, which had mysteriously developed a penchant for singing opera in a surprisingly baritone voice, had returned to their quiet, floral contemplation. The town, it seemed, had unfriended absurdity.

Elara, perched on the worn velvet cushion of her grandmother’s armchair, felt the shift like a warm bath. The house, which had once thrummed with the anxious energy of a thousand forgotten conversations, now hummed a soft, contented lullaby. The teacups on the mantelpiece, no longer whispering secrets of a haywire pact, simply held the quiet dignity of porcelain survivors. A particularly chipped one, the very vessel that had disgorged the diary of the Pact Children, sat contentedly, its floral pattern faded but its story told. Elara ran a finger along its rim, a ghost of a smile playing on her lips. It wasn’t haunted, not really. It was simply… full. Sir Reginald Fluffernutter, perched regally on Elara’s shoulder, twitched his whiskers with an air of profound satisfaction. He, too, seemed to appreciate the return to normalcy, particularly the absence of tiny, ill-fitting hats that had, at one point, threatened to become a permanent fixture of his grooming routine. He nudged Elara’s cheek with his nose, a gesture that, to anyone else, might have been a simple hamster affection. To Elara, it was a silent acknowledgment of their shared adventure, a furry, whiskered high-five.
