Elara sat cross-legged on the floor, the worn diary splayed open before her. Sunlight, dappled by the ancient willow outside, painted shifting patterns on the pages, illuminating ink that had faded like old photographs. The words, once a jumble of childish scrawls and earnest pronouncements, were beginning to stitch themselves into a coherent, albeit utterly bonkers, tapestry. Her house, she now understood, wasn't just haunted by the ghosts of forgotten tea parties; it was haunted by her. Or rather, a tiny, giggling, wish-making version of her.

She remembered now, in flashes that felt like popping bubbles of memory. The secret den beneath the old oak, smelling of damp earth and whispered secrets. The thrill of drawing up the pact, a solemn agreement scrawled on a discarded paper napkin, signed with smudged fingerprints. They’d wanted Willow Creek to be extra special, hadn't they? Not just a little special, but spectacularly, outrageously, unbelievably special. And what was more special than things being… well, a bit wonky?

Elara’s gaze drifted to Sir Reginald Fluffernutter, who was currently attempting to balance a particularly large sunflower seed on his nose. He gave it a tentative nudge, and it tumbled to the floor. With a sigh that was far too human for a hamster, he scrambled after it, stuffing it into his cheek pouches. He seemed to understand, somehow, the gravity of the situation. He always did. It was one of his many endearing, and frankly, slightly unnerving, traits. He’d been there, hadn't he? Watching her, a tiny furry witness to her own forgotten childhood.
