The silence in Lord Valerius’s solar was a heavy thing, pressing down like the oppressive humidity of a summer storm. Torches sputtered in their sconces, casting restless shadows that danced like specters on the tapestries depicting ancient hunts and bloody victories. Valerius himself sat hunched behind his vast oak desk, his face a mask of grim contemplation, the flickering light carving deep lines into his brow. Across from him, perched on the edge of a stiff-backed chair, was Silas Thorne. Thorne was a man sculpted from shadows and secrets, his movements fluid and economical, his gaze sharp enough to flay the truth from bone. He wore the dark, unadorned robes of an investigator, a subtle statement of purpose that spoke volumes.
"He was a masterpiece," Valerius finally rasped, his voice rough as gravel. He gestured with a trembling hand towards a large, empty display stand in the corner of the room. It was usually occupied by a grim, obsidian-like statue, a testament to the raw, untamed power their house wielded. Now, it was an accusation. "The pinnacle of our craft. And he simply… vanished."
Thorne leaned forward, his eyes never leaving Valerius’s face. "Vanished, my Lord? Or failed?"
