The air in the precinct buzzed with that low-grade hum of desperation, the kind that settled in your bones after days of chasing shadows and finding only more of them. Captain Mulligan had called us in, his face a roadmap of worry lines etched deeper than usual. The Hunter’s Moon Killer was escalating, and the city was holding its breath. Jack sat across from me, all coiled energy and restless eyes, his jaw tight. We were a walking contradiction, him and I, but right now, the tension between us felt less like a chasm and more like a taut string, vibrating with the same grim purpose.

“Another one,” Mulligan stated, his voice gravelly. He slid a file across the polished oak desk. “Thomas Abernathy. Found him this morning. Same MO. Ritualistic. Clean.”

I opened the file, the stark black-and-white crime scene photos a familiar, sickening punch to the gut. Abernathy. Known hunter. Lived alone out near Oakhaven. The details were sparse, but the pattern was undeniable. Three victims in as many weeks, all involved in the hunting community. All found posed, almost reverently, their hunting rifles beside them.
