Chapter 5: The Serpent's Maw
Tasha and Elias follow the obsidian stone's pull to the Serpent's Maw, a treacherous canyon where they encounter Kaelen, who warns them of a Sand Wyrm nest ahead. Tasha's singing awakens an ancient guardian, forcing them to flee deeper into the canyon. They find temporary shelter in a hidden cave, where Tasha discovers an inscription linking her bloodline to Zerzura. The chapter ends with Zahra appearing just as Tariq's men are heard approaching.
Dawn broke over the canyon like a wound in the sky, bleeding amber and rose across the jagged cliffs. Tasha woke to the smell of dust and the low crackle of dying embers. Her body ached from the stone floor, but her hand instinctively went to her pocket, where the obsidian fragment rested, warm and humming.
Elias was already up, saddling their horses with practiced efficiency. He moved with a quiet urgency that set her nerves on edge.
"We need to move," he said without looking at her. "The stone—did it pull you in your sleep?"
