Kaelen's breath came in ragged gasps as they pushed themselves upright on the cold stone floor of the Well of Souls. The chamber was dimly lit by a soft blue glow emanating from the pool at its center, where Tasha knelt, the obsidian fragment in her hands. Elias stood beside her, his hand resting on her shoulder, his face drawn with worry. Zahra sat a few paces away, her eyes fixed on Kaelen, her expression unreadable.
"Kaelen?" Tasha's voice trembled. "How did you—"
"No time," Kaelen said, their throat raw. They stumbled forward, water dripping from their clothes, and dropped to their knees beside the pool. "I know what you have to do. And I know the cost."
