Kaelen stood at the edge of the collapsed passage, their hands raw from scrabbling at the rocks. The sun had dipped below the canyon's rim, casting long shadows that bled into the deepening twilight. They had been at it for hours, moving stone after stone, but the rubble was too deep, the passage too unstable. Every shift sent a cascade of smaller rocks tumbling, and twice they had nearly been buried themselves.
The silence was the worst part. No voices from beyond, no sign of life. Just the wind and the distant howl of a sand wyrm, hunting in the dark.
"Think," Kaelen muttered, pressing their forehead against the cool stone. "There has to be another way."
