Chapter 12: The Silent City
Kaelen leads the group through the lost city of Zerzura toward the central spire. They navigate a maze of glowing streets and encounter ancient guardians that test their resolve. Tasha's connection to the city deepens, and she senses the heart of Zerzura is near. Tariq's pursuit forces a desperate decision, ending with a collapsing passage that separates the group.
The city swallowed them whole. Kaelen held the flame high, its light dancing across facades of black stone that seemed to drink the glow and give back only shadow. The structures rose on either side—towers with spiraling staircases that led to nowhere, arches shaped like rib cages, domes that pulsed with a faint inner light. Every surface bore the same symbols Tasha had awakened in the observatory, and they hummed now, a low vibration that Kaelen felt in their bones.
Tasha walked at the front, her hand pressed to her chest as if feeling for a heartbeat. The obsidian fragment in her other hand had dimmed, but it still cast a soft blue glow that pooled at her feet.
"This way," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "The spire. It's calling."
