Chapter 4
The Agonizing Choice
Under the crimson moon's watchful gaze, Jazmine and Colin face an impossible decision. Do they risk everything for a love that defies convention, or do they sever their connection, forever haunted by the 'what ifs'?
The air thrummed with an unnatural stillness, the kind that precedes a storm. Above, the crimson moon, a swollen, bleeding orb, cast long, distorted shadows that danced like specters across the forest floor. It was here, in this hushed sanctuary, that Jazmine and Colin found themselves, the weight of their clandestine love pressing down on them with an almost physical force. The thrill, once a heady intoxicating rush, had begun to curdle into a gnawing anxiety, a constant hum beneath the surface of their stolen moments.
Jazmine traced the rough bark of an ancient oak, its gnarled branches reaching towards the sky like skeletal fingers. Her heart felt as twisted and knotted as the wood beneath her touch. The near miss, the frantic scramble to conceal their meeting, the sheer, icy terror of Eleanor’s unexpected presence at the edge of the woods – it had all coalesced into a sickening certainty. Their fragile bubble, so carefully constructed, was not just showing cracks; it was beginning to splinter.
Colin stood a few paces away, his gaze fixed on the moon, his brow furrowed in a way that spoke volumes of his inner turmoil. He looked less like the courageous man who had first dared to meet her gaze across a crowded room, and more like a man cornered, his back against a wall. “It was too close, Jazmine,” he murmured, his voice a low, rough sound that barely disturbed the quiet. “Far too close.”
