The air in Harmony Creek tasted like dust and faded dreams. Elias breathed it in, a practiced indifference settling over him like the grit that coated everything. He’d seen a hundred towns just like this, each one a temporary pause, a fleeting breath before the next forced inhale of the road. His baseball cap, pulled low, and the ever-present dark lenses of his sunglasses were his uniform, his shield against the relentless scrutiny of the world. He was a ghost, a man built from the spaces between things, his past a carefully constructed void.

He found work at the local diner, a place that smelled perpetually of stale coffee and fried onions. Washing dishes was a rhythm he understood, a mindless task that allowed his thoughts to drift, a dangerous indulgence he usually fought. But here, in the anonymity of Harmony Creek, the edges of his vigilance felt a little softer. He scrubbed plates until his knuckles were raw, the hot water a comforting sting against his skin. The clatter of cutlery, the murmur of conversations he didn’t participate in, the fleeting smiles of customers he wouldn't remember – it was all a familiar soundtrack to his solitary existence. He was good at blending, at becoming a part of the background, a shadow among shadows.

During his breaks, he’d retreat to the small, rented room above a pawn shop. The walls were thin, the mattress lumpy, but it was a sanctuary of sorts. He’d pull out the worn photograph, its edges softened by countless touches. Stella. Her smile was a captured sunbeam, her eyes held a warmth that Elias felt he’d lost somewhere along the way. He traced the curve of her cheek, a phantom touch that sent a familiar ache through his chest. He never knew how long he’d been running, how many miles had bled into each other, but Stella was the constant, the anchor that kept him from drifting into complete oblivion. The faded inscription on the back of the photo, barely visible now, read simply: ‘For Elias, Always.’
