Chapter 7
A Fragile Peace
The dust settles. Elias has confronted his demons and found a semblance of peace, forever changed by his journey and the enduring enigma of Stella.
The desert wind, a constant companion on Elias’s journey, had softened its harsh bite. It whispered now, not of pursuit, but of a quietude he hadn’t known in years. The sun, no longer a merciless overseer, cast a gentler glow, painting the worn landscape in hues of amber and rose. He had faced the shadows, the relentless pursuit, the gnawing fear that had dictated his every breath. He had run, he had fought, and in the echoing silence that followed, he had found something akin to peace.
The diner door creaked open, admitting a blast of cool air and a woman with eyes the color of a stormy sea. She was older, her face a roadmap of a life lived, but her gaze was sharp, observant. She didn’t flinch from his shadowed presence, nor did she pry. She simply placed a mug of coffee before him, the aroma rich and comforting, and settled onto the stool beside him, her movements unhurried.
