The desert sun beat down with a relentless fury, baking the cracked earth until it shimmered like a mirage. Elias pulled the brim of his cap lower, the worn fabric offering little respite from the glare. The sunglasses, scratched and fogged with sweat, did their best to shield his eyes, but the world beyond them was a wash of bleached-out hues. He’d learned to live in these liminal spaces, the edges of towns, the forgotten highways, the places where shadows stretched long and secrets could be buried deep. His life was a series of transient stops, odd jobs performed with a practiced efficiency that left no trace, no connections, no roots. He was a ghost, drifting through existence, his only constant companion the faded photograph tucked deep within his wallet. Stella. Her smile, caught in a moment of pure, unadulterated joy, was a beacon in the otherwise bleak landscape of his memories.

He’d been moving for days, a gnawing unease settling in his gut like a stone. The cryptic message, delivered by a nervous kid with eyes too old for his years, had confirmed his worst fears. “They know. Stella’s name. The desert is no longer safe.” The words, scrawled on a torn piece of paper, were a brand, a confirmation that the past he’d so desperately tried to outrun had finally caught up. The message was sparse, but the implication was deafening. Someone, somewhere, knew about Stella, and that knowledge was a death knell. He’d packed his meager belongings, the worn leather bag containing little more than a change of clothes, a few tools, and the photograph, and had driven east, away from the coast, away from the last place he’d dared to breathe easy.

The road ahead dissolved into a haze of heat. He was deep in the heart of nowhere, the landscape a desolate expanse of sand and scrub. It was here, under the vast, indifferent sky, that he saw the car. It was an old pickup, dust-caked and battered, pulled over to the side of the road, its hood propped open. A figure stood beside it, silhouetted against the blinding sun. As Elias drew closer, he saw it was a woman, her face obscured by a wide-brimmed hat. She looked stranded, helpless. His instincts, honed by years of vigilance, screamed caution. But the woman waved, a tentative gesture, and a flicker of something akin to pity, a dangerous emotion for a man like him, stirred within him.
